So I Started Reading . . . Uprooted by Naomi Novik

Agnieszka dealing with Dragon.
This book. THIS BOOK. It's beautiful and stunning from its gorgeous illustrated dust jacket, to its gold foiled spine, to the words inside. Uprooted is reminding me of all the reasons I read fantasy when I was younger. It's all about magic, friendship, a girl finding her strength little by little, and terrifying malevolent force that forces me to sleep with the lights on.*

Agnieszka, my sweet and irreverent precious. She has no regard for rules and decorum and I LOVE IT. She will get down and dirty to achieve her goals. Nothing is off limits when it comes to Agnieszka's loved ones, nothing. Dragon, of course is her prim and proper foil. His temper tantrums are hilarious in their absurdity. He's like this hundreds-year-old sulky child. Agnieszka needling Dragon over his precise nature is the best part of the book so far. I cannot wait to see what comes next!

*There's been two times in my life when I had to sleep with the lights on after reading a fantasy book. The first was The Two Princesses of Bamarre, because the specters terrified me when I was in elementary school. (The idea of them still scares me, tbh.) The other was last night after reading a few chapters of Uprooted. That Wood. It is the stuff of nightmares.

Tell me, what books have you begun or read this week?
