Fifteen-year-old Izzy Brannick was trained to fight monsters. For centuries, her family has hunted magical creatures. But when Izzy’s older sister vanishes without a trace while on a job, Izzy's mom decides they need to take a break.
Izzy and her mom move to a new town, but they soon discover it’s not as normal as it appears. A series of hauntings has been plaguing the local high school, and Izzy is determined to prove her worth and investigate. But assuming the guise of an average teenager is easier said than done. For a tough girl who's always been on her own, it’s strange to suddenly make friends and maybe even have a crush.
Can Izzy trust her new friends to help find the secret behind the hauntings before more people get hurt? (Summary from Goodreads.com)
I recieved a free e-arc from Net-galley. This has in no way influenced my opinion of the book.
I loved School Spirits by Rachel Hawkins! I had missed reading her books so much after the final Hex Hall book. This new series does not disappoint! Izzy is an awesome, new kick-butt character totally worthy of being Sophie's cousin.
I really enjoyed getting a glimpse into the Brannick side of life. Izzy was so tough when facing monsters, but became a complete gibbering mess when asked to attend high school. I loved reading things from her point of view. Her interactions with Torin were hilarious. I kept wanting them to have more conversations about her life, just for the fun of it. Watching Izzy with her mom was an interesting experience. It seemed like her mom couldn't handle balancing being a monster slayer and trying to mother Izzy like a normal mom would. Seeing how frequently they butted heads, I wanted to know more about Finley. I wanted to see how she balanced out Izzy and her mom.
Can I talk about Dex now because OMG do I love Dex. He was the most pretentious and adorable high-schooler I've ever read. I wanted him to be with Izzy from his first appearance, their chemistry was so amazing. He was such an intelligent and fearless guy, I loved him! I also adored Romy and Anderson, how nice they were to Izzy and how welcome they made her feel. PMS (Paranormal Management Society) really brought them together.
I was crazy about the end of School Spirits! It was such a twist. I had totally expected one thing to occur but the total opposite happened. I was so interested in the dynamic Hawkins brought up. She made the book center around the fact that while some people can do evil things, it doesn't necessarily make them evil. The pacing of the novel was also fabulous. I felt like the bunny chasing after the carrot tied to a stick.
There were a few small things I didn't enjoy about the book. I was frustrated with how long the mystery took to pan out, but was excited with how it ended. While I did love the book as a whole, the ending with Dex and Izzy, that didn't seem too realistic given how up-tight Izzy's mom is.
School Spirits is a great read that I would recommend to anyone, but especially to fans of Rachel's Hex Hall series. This book is filled with awesome new characters, friendships and mysteries. This book is for people who love a kick-butt heroine, magic and mystery. Go out and buy it! Now!
Also, I'm sensing Rachel Hawkins may have something against a guy named Ben. You know, it's just a feeling I get from reading the book.
