Calla Tor has always known her destiny: After graduating from the Mountain School, she'll be the mate of sexy alpha wolf Ren Laroche and fight with him, side by side, ruling their pack and guarding sacred sites for the Keepers. But when she violates her masters' laws by saving a beautiful human boy out for a hike, Calla begins to question her fate, her existence, and the very essence of the world she has known. By following her heart, she might lose everything-- including her own life. Is forbidden love worth the ultimate sacrifice?

I'm a huge fan of werewolves. When picking up Nightshade I was sure it was going to love the novel, I just didn't know how much!

I loved almost all of the characters, Calla, Shay, Ren, Bryn, Ansel and Mason especially. ;) The only real problem I had was with the love triangle. Calla was obviously split between Shay and Ren, which I can understand. However, she was sending so many conflicting signals it was hard to keep up. I love Ren but I feel powerfully about Shay. Ren can kiss me but I have to stop him. Shay can make out with me but 2 seconds later I'm going to push him away. I feel like having Ren ravish me, we explode together, but I want to be with Shay more because we have attraction and something else. This is the sort of stuff which makes a passionate love triangle, if done correctly. Cremer had no issue ratcheting up the sexual tension to an unbearable level with both boys. Though there might have been a problem keeping Calla consistently wanting one or the other. It's probably just a personal preference, but I guess I prefer more clear-cut "she wants who she wants" love story.

The supernatural elements in this book really stood out for me. The alchemical symbols and werewolf/ witch mythology were very unique. Given the sheer number of werewolf books, finding an original origin story and plot are like finding your weight's worth in gold. The book was long though, I will admit that. However, it constantly keeps going with new secrets, relationships, betrayals and even pack dynamics. The pages actually ended up turning pretty quickly when I found the rhythm of the novel.

Dark, dangerous, sexy, and downright mystical, this book is a must-read! I almost can't believe I waited so long to read it. Now, it will be torture waiting for summer, when the sequel, Wolfsbane. (such a cliff-hanger ending for the first book!)

Super long teaser lines: To make up for my lack of reviews recently

"This is where you belong, Calla.” He pulled me closer, tilting my chin up. “Be with me. Tell me it’s what you want.”
I couldn’t tear my eyes from his. “What I want?”
“Yes. Anything, everything you need, I’ll give you. Always. I promise. Just tell me one thing.”
“That you want this, us.” His voice dropped so low I could barely hear him. “That someday you’ll love me.”

I love teasing all of you. ;)
